Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race

Dear MOMAR community,

Well, the time has come to make the final call. We’ve been holding out hope that somehow this year’s Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race could go ahead as planned. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we will need to postpone the race to next year.

The decision to postpone simply comes down to the 50-person limit for any gatherings in BC (as directed by BC’s Provincial Health Officer) with no indication that this restriction will be relaxed anytime soon. Numerous race organizations have also tried to find ways around this limitation and, so far, no exceptions have been made. That said, we fully understand and support the PHO and the current public safety guidelines.

We can appreciate how disappointing this news is to everyone who eagerly signed up at the start of the year. We share your disappointment and we would love nothing more than to be on the start line in Cumberland with all 700 of you. This would’ve been our 41st MOMAR since the event started in 2000, and we’re going to miss the thrill of seeing everyone again, making new friends, cheering you through the finish line and celebrating the adventure at the after-party (we’re really sad about the party…).

Over the past 21 years, the MOMAR has shown its resiliency. We survived years of low registration numbers, which barely covered our production costs. We endured multiple host venue changes. We survived nasty race day storms and heat waves. The MOMAR will be back, but to be transparent, this year’s financial loss will impact us for years to come. We do hope that when we return next year, you’ll be there with us.

The race is now scheduled for Saturday September 25, 2021. For everyone who was signed up for this year’s race, please watch for an email in the coming weeks with details on your registration options.

We would like to extend a BIG thanks to the Cumberland community and our team of sponsors, charity partners, suppliers, volunteers and crew who were on standby and ready to go. And of course, a HUGE thanks to all of the registered racers who made the commitment and were ready for one awesome adventure. You’re all amazing and we can’t wait to see you next year!

In the meantime, we’re working on a virtual race option as we know many of you would be interested in taking on a multi-sport adventure and engaging with the MOMAR community. More details to be released soon.

Thank you so much for your patience, understanding and continued support. Keep up the adventures, stay healthy and have a great summer!

Race Director

ESTIMATED COMPLETION TIME:  Teams can expect to finish the MOMAR in 4.5 to 8 hours for the Enduro and 3.5 to 6.5 hours for the Sport.  All teams must cross the finish line by 5pm or face disqualification.  There will be a series of time cutoff points to ensure you make the finish line time deadline.

TEAM COMPOSITION:  For the Enduro, you can race solo or in a team of two or four.  Sport course racers can ONLY race as team of two.  Any gender combination is allowed.

FRIDAY NIGHT MANDATORY REGISTRATION:   All teams are required to come to the Riding Fool Hostel (2705 Dunsmuir Ave, Cumberland) on Friday night to pick up their race package, event t-shirt, and hand in their waiver and medical forms. You will also find out the location of the start and finish location for the race. One member from your team can check in the entire team, but must bring all completed waivers and medical forms.

SATURDAY NIGHT AWARDS DINNER & AFTER PARTY:  The MOMAR after-party is legendary and was voted “Best Post Race Party” by Get Out There Magazine readers for three years in a row. Celebrate a grueling day of racing with your fellow racers and volunteers at Mt. Washington Alpine Resort. The night features a gourmet dinner, an awards presentation with tons of great draw prizes, and ends with an after-party at Fat Teddy’s.  All racers and volunteers get a ticket with their race fee.  A limited number of guest tickets are available for $45+gst (tickets will be available during online registration).

WHAT CAN I WIN?  All first place finishers in each category will receive a medal, $50 Gift Certificate from Frontrunners, accolades from your fans and bragging rights until next year. Second will win a medal and a box of full sized Clif bars and third place finishers will receive a medal and a bottle of Hoyne Dark Matter. Other big prizes include a $500 Gift Card to Atmosphere, a $500 Shopping Spree at Frontrunners and a weekend stay at the Parkside Hotel & Spa in Victoria.

And we encourage you to put the FUN into the race by coming in costume and compete for the highly coveted Atmosphere Spirit Award.  The top 10 teams with the best costume/spirit will go into a draw for comp entries to the next MOMAR and $100 Atmosphere gift card! NOTE: Prizes subject to change.

NEED TO RENT A KAYAK?  If you need to rent a kayak, we have a team of suppliers who will bring the boats to the race. However, these boats book up quick (like in January) so you’ll need to be prepared to find alternate sources. There are many companies that do not deliver, but you can go and pick up a boat from their shop and transport it over yourself. Don’t forget that you don’t have to paddle a kayak either, you can paddle a canoe, paddle board, or outrigger. Click here for a complete list of kayak rental companies that deliver boats to the MOMAR.

TRANSFERRING YOUR ENTRY TO ANOTHER RACER:  If you cannot race, then you can transfer your entry to another racer by completing the following step:

Step 1:  Find a buyer, negotiate your selling price
Step 2: Complete the Transfer Form
Step 3: Email info@mindovermountain.com to let us know this has been done
Step 4: We will then email your buyer with a special access code that will provide them with access to register
Step 5: You can then collect the money from them once they confirm with you that this has been done
